“ArtsWAVE in Residence” is the name of an exciting new exhibit in Ellenville, NY, this Fall. ArtsWAVE, Ellenville’s local artists association, revived their artist in residence programs at their Market Street location in 2011. Ulster County artists who needed studio space were invited to work at the ArtsWAVE Art Center, free of charge. Leslie Bender, Nancy Colombo and Florence Lasicki are three artists who responded to the invitation. As a “give back” to the community, each artist held “open studio” hours, and offered free public workshops.
Now, people can enjoy an exhibit of works by all three artists at Ellenville’s Gallery Link. From November 7 through December 28, Leslie Bender, Nancy Colombo and Florence Lasicki will present a beautiful multi-media show of painting, weaving, silk screen and pastels. The exhibit will also help people gain a deeper understanding of the important community role ArtsWAVE plays by hosting residency programs, art workshops and collaborating with other community based organizations.
Estyn Hulbert , current director of ArtsWAVE, said the Artist in Residence program was a great success. “From the start we had people popping into the Art Center, wanting to know what was happening, what the art was about, and getting to know the artists. It was exciting to see how welcoming Ellenville is to visiting artists, and how hungry the community is for art. The most exciting outcome has been that our first artist in residence, Leslie Bender, loved Ellenville so much that she has set up her working studio on Canal Street. Meanwhile both Florence Lasicki and Nancy Colombo want to teach more classes!” “To me, the exhibit represents not only great local talent, but one of the greatest strengths of our community – collaboration”, said Ellenville Public Library & Museum’s Community Relations Specialist, Asha Golliher.
The Gallery Link, located at Ellenville Public Library & Museum at 40 Center Street, Ellenville, is pleased to present this special exhibition. There will be an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, November 12, from 12-2pm, to which the public is most cordially invited. For more information, please call (845)647-5530.
Drawings by Monica Cohen
at the Healing Art Gallery
November 7 – December 30, 2011
Monica Cohen’s drawings will be on solo exhibition at the Healing Art Gallery at Ellenville Regional Hospital from early November through the end of 2011. Ellenville Regional Hospital is located on Route 209 in Ellenville. Free and open to the public, 8am-8pm daily. For more information about the Healing Art exhibit or the Ellenville Regional Hospital, please contact (845) 647-6400, ext. 286.
Monica Cohen was born in Coquimbo, Chile. She began studying design in her late teens and was instantly inspired to refine her drawing skills in college. She later took several courses on drawing the human figure at the University of Chile. She continued her artistic education in the United States by studying computer graphic design and traditional oil painting.
In 2006, Cohen was commissioned to create a pen and ink drawing of the first Post Office in Ellenville, New York. This project triggered her interest in the history of Ellenville and after she completed the project, she continued to research how the village looked in the 1900s. Her latest work involved a series of pen and ink drawings based on old post cards and photographs of Ellenville.
Her research of the past led her to explore her own early childhood through art. Cohen transformed her late father’s photographs into pen and ink drawings, recalling her own experiences and memories of childhood.
Childhood is a source of inspiration for Cohen because she believes it is a period of natural innocence. The focus of her work is the celebration of life throughout childhood, adulthood and motherhood. In celebrating life, she also focuses on the natural environment and society that interacts with her subjects. Through her art, she continues to learn and connect to the beauty that surrounds her.
