Position: Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theater A/V Engineer
Department: Production
Reports to: House A/V Supervisor
Classification: FLSA: Full Time, Seasonal, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Position Start Date: September 7, 2026
Salary Range: $24 per hour

Position Overview:

Responsible for the installation and maintenance of all sound and video equipment and the operation thereof for rehearsals and performances and the direction of all employees working in this area. When not working in this area, they shall perform such other work as assigned.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist the House A/V Supervisor with research, interpretation and implementation of sound and video designs for all Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre productions.
  • Perform as Audio Mixer/Board Operator/Microphone Dresser on all Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre productions.
  • Become familiar with script, design concepts and system drawings to efficiently address questions from production and facilities staff.
  • Maintain the integrity of the design throughout the production.
  • Maintain the integrity of the production communications system, both wired infrastructure and wireless.
  • Be in attendance for all sound quiet time, projector focus, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, previews, and performances as required.
  • Read rehearsal reports, production/show reports, rehearsal schedules and production calendars.
  • Help troubleshoot technical notes and problems as they come up.
  • Install and maintain simple, closed circuit video systems as needed for productions.
  • Program QLab for theatrical playback.
  • Program/modify the current setup of the Yamaha CL3 audio console.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

  • 2-3 years’ professional sound experience, preferably in live musical theater mixing.
  • Experience running plays/musicals and following stage management cues.
  • Advanced knowledge of programing Yamaha CL3 console.
  • Ability to mix musical groups/bands as FOH mixer or monitor mixer.
  • Ability to work long hours, i.e. – 40 hours plus weekends and evenings, as necessary.
  • Ability to mix line by line for live dialogue.
  • Ability to create and use a book to run a show.
  • Strong working knowledge of QLab and Mac OS.
  • Functional knowledge and skills in a variety of audio related areas including, but not limited to: microphone reinforcement, recording techniques, sound editing, live audio mixing, equalization, time alignment, and console programming.
  • Skill in repair and maintenance of standard audio/video equipment, including soldering.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and respond calmly and efficiently to frequent changes during the production and rehearsal process.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to solve problems and keep calm under pressure.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures necessary to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of safe rigging practices.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Dante certification.
  • Ability to effectively communicate by asking informed questions, relaying information to others, and effectively giving and receiving criticism.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with members of the production department.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to solve problems and keep calm under pressure.
  • Staying informed on current best practices in theatre technology and audio techniques.
  • Possessing a positive attitude, initiative, being flexible, working well as a team member, and having high attention to detail.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on ladders, at heights, and in hard-to-reach places.
  • Speaking and hearing are essential to the communication needs of the position.
