CAC HISTORY

Contemporary Arts Center is one of the oldest and most respected contemporary art institutions in the United States, founded in Cincinnati in 1939. CAC does not maintain a permanent collection; instead, it presents a dynamic program of exhibitions, performances, and public engagement that responds to artists working at the leading edge of contemporary practice.

CAC is housed in a landmark building designed by internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid, which opened in 2003 and remains one of her most celebrated works. The museum is committed to access, innovation, inclusion, and the belief that contemporary art belongs to everyone.

SCOPE OF POSITION

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and Installation, the Art Handlers’ primary responsibilities are to assist with the installation of exhibitions, safe packing and movement of artwork and prepping and painting gallery walls. The candidate should be a self-motivated, conscientious individual who takes pride in their own work, with the ability to work collaboratively with others.

DUTIES

  • Assisting with exhibition installation including safely and securely unpacking and packing artwork, installing and deinstalling artwork, and storing crates and packing materials.
  • Safely transporting artwork around CAC using standard museum practices. Patching and painting gallery walls; occasionally building temporary walls.
  • Assisting with general fabrications including plinths, pedestals, possible crates, and various artwork productions.
  • Maintaining exhibition galleries through light cleaning and minor repairs if needed.
  • Working collaboratively with Director of Facilities and Installations as well as other art handlers, curators, registrars, exhibitions teammates, and other CAC staff.
  • Utilizing tools, machines and equipment with best practices to ensure safety for yourself, others, the artwork, the building and the equipment.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor of Fine Arts or equivalent coursework in studio art and a minimum of 2 years’ experience that includes regular art handling and packing of fine artwork. Must be able to demonstrate attention to detail as well as possess the ability to work with one’s hands and experience working with power tools. Available to work evenings and weekends if necessary. Woodshop or woodworking experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires the physical strength necessary to lift and/or move heavy objects. Able to lift and carry 50 lbs. and able to move, maneuver, and manipulate 250 lbs. using mechanical equipment. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach, crouch, climb a ladder and work comfortably on a scissors lift.
