About MYCincinnati & Price Hill Will
MYCincinnati (Music for Youth in Cincinnati) is a free youth orchestra program for children in Price Hill. Founded in 2011 on the idea that personal transformation can be achieved by striving for musical excellence, MYCincinnati gives students the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument and play in an ensemble. MYCincinnati is inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan national youth orchestra network that uses music as a vehicle for social change. MYCincinnati is a program of Price Hill Will, the community development corporation for the three Price Hill neighborhoods. Price Hill Will’s mission is to improve the quality of life for all residents of Price Hill using an equitable, creative, and asset-based approach to physical, civic, social, and economic development.
Position, Hours & Pay
Part-time Teaching Artist is paid at $30/hour, Monday through Friday, instructional times 3:30-6:00 pm. Work hours comprise 10-12 instructional hours per week plus paid time for planning, travel, and staff meetings. We are active from September through May (ca. 30 weeks) plus some weeks for summer camp. The ideal candidate will be a multi-woodwind specialist (flute, clarinet, saxes) and have some conducting experience. The Teaching Artist will model excellence, a love for music, and compassion while exemplifying MYCincinnati’s mission in uplifting the student and the community. This person will be able to critically reflect on teaching practices through the lens of equity and contribute to a team of passionate and diverse teaching artists.
Woodwind Teaching Artist Duties
• Teach woodwind students in large group, sectional, and individual settings across multiple levels
• Teach musicianship to Beginner Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and the Wind Ensemble
• Maintain a fun, friendly, warm and inviting, yet structured and productive environment in the classroom
• Collaborate with the Woodwinds/Brass/Percussion (WBP) team to plan curriculum, repertoire, and class structure
• Choose repertoire, update and organize the WBP music libraries, and create musical arrangements if needed
• Help supervise students as they arrive and depart
• Set up and clean up rehearsal spaces daily
• Communicate frequently with staff, volunteers
• Participate in and assist with set-up and tear-down at student concerts (outside of program hours)
• Prioritize MYCincinnati’s mission and core values
• Assist MYCincinnati Program Manager with additional tasks as needed
Qualifications
• Active professional-level performer on at least one woodwind instrument
• Understanding of and some ability to play multiple woodwind instruments
• Excellent classroom management skills. Able to lead large groups of students as the sole Teaching Artist in the classroom.
• Be flexible, patient, have excellent communication skills, and able to receive constructive feedback from MYCincinnati Director and Teaching Artists
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to details
Strong Positives
• Degree in Music Education or comparable experience
• An exceptional knowledge of a variety of teaching practices
• Conducting, arranging, and/or composing experience
• Fluency or proficiency in Spanish
