Description
The Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine (MUCCE) invites proposals from Greater Cincinnati Area artists with a socially engaged art practice, and/or community engagement experience to apply for the Facilitating Artist position. Qualified applicants will be invited to prototype one paid workshop with community residents before selection as the MUCCE facilitating artist.
Storefronts is the socially-engaged art program of MUCCE. In 2017, three windows at the Miami University Center for Community Engagement storefront space in Over-the- Rhine, Cincinnati, were converted for our community-run, student-supported platform for art. Since then, our creative practice has also spilled out into the neighborhood and beyond in many forms including outdoor installations, large-format photo exhibits, performance art, dance, video projections, poetry, and even urban space design. We invite Over-the-Rhine neighbors, Miami students, artists, and our community organization partners into collaboration with each other to make artwork that engages some of the most challenging issues in contemporary urban development. See our work HERE.
Role
Introduce/expose/teach community residents, partner organizations, and students, to social practice art – global, national, local.
As the permanent Facilitating Artist, you would develop and lead participatory processes to design, organize, and implement up to two art shows per year, in collaboration with Over-the-Rhine residents and MUCCE’s three community partner organizations, and with support from Miami faculty, students, and other artists. Scope to include:
Develop concept for each show;
- I.D. and recruit neighborhood collaborators (current and new);
- Design and facilitate collaborator training/preparation for their participation in shows;
- I.D., recruit, and work with consulting artists, other creative professionals, and/or tech experts, as needed to produce shows;
- Materials procurement as needed;
- Materials preparation/making as needed;
- Promotion of the art show(s);
- Develop scope of work and facilitate learning for Miami student(s);
- Arrange for documentation of each show, by MU Photo Dept. (through coordination with Miami U. Architecture and Interior Design office); by MU student(s); and/ or by securing local photographers/videographers.
Identify outside opportunities/other venues to show the artwork produced by this program. Promote, install/show our work with community collaborators and students, when possible.
Qualifications
We’re looking for candidates who are artists or other cultural producers with at least two years of socially engaged arts practice, and/or community engagement work of some kind. Someone who lives or works in Over-the-Rhine would be of particular interest, but it’s not required.
