Another hot event is coming up that will feature nine amazing performances by one talented African American performer. Starting on September 23 and running through October 22, "Mr. Joy" is Daniel Beaty's story of a Chinese immigrant who is beloved in his community, but falls victim to a violent crime. Though we never meet our title character, we do meet nine neighbors and community members who are affected by the tragedy – all played by lead actress Debra Walton.

Debra was last seen at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park as Charlaine in "Ain’t Misbehavin’" and as Tina Turner in "Beehive." Debra brings each character to life as we learn the subtle, profound and unassuming impact the shop owner has had on each of their lives.

Join director Nicole Watson at the Thompson Shelterhouse for opening night of "Mr. Joy." This show will take you on an absorbing journey through a Harlem neighborhood stricken with – and transformed by – the unique form of grief born from violence.
